Open House, followed by a talk by Jessica Zitter MD

Bar opens at 5:30. Bring a potluck dish.

About the talk -- Chris Longaker:
All - Jessica Zitter MD, MPH has agreed to give IYC her presentation-talk-documentary for free on Saturday May 12, 2018 at 7:30pm following the open house. I highly recommend that you visit her web site jessicazitter.com to discover more about her and her very very important message on how to best navigate the ICU; how to best protect your rights as a patient; the need to have a patient advocate all to ensure that your wants (quality of life) or the preferences of your loved one are followed and protected.  Jessica's book "Extreme Measures" relates the story of the beginning of palliative care by physicians in the ICU and in other specialties as well. Palliative care prioritizes the patient's values  and preferences in a an environment where the default approach is the rote use of technology. While we might all agree that this is not your fun topic, let alone not often talked about, it is a certainty and it is a topic that informs and educates us all on an event we all must experience.  Doctor Zitter  is a Stanford Graduate; Case Western School of Medicine graduate and she is a fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF. She is double-boarded in two specialties - critical care and palliative care. Her book "Extreme Measures" is a great read. Her documentary "Extremis" was Oscar nominated. We attended her presentation last month and were awestruck and blown away by her and her message.  I have been in conversation with MGH, North Coast Alliance, Drs Barton, Duncan(s), Schecter and others who all endorse what she has to say and that what she has to say will be well received.  What I need are some volunteers to help organize the promotion of this event, the handling of reservations, and a focus group so that we make the best of this rare opportunity.  If you can help out in the planning and or footwork promotion that would be teriffic.   Some of you may have had personal anecdotes as have I, and to know that some one out there is making a difference so that the patient's desires, preferences and choices have priorities and are to be considered is long overdue. She is a force.  So, please join me.

Rowing and Paddling - Shell Beach Pot-Luck

If you have a row boat, kayak, or other human-powered craft, please join us on Sunday, April 15 for a day trip to Shell Beach with a pot-luck picnic for lunch.  We’re planning to push off from the club around 10am, make our way up the bay about 1 mile against the weakening current, and enjoy a picnic lunch on Shell Beach around noon.  High tide is at about 1pm, so we’ll head back to the club in the early afternoon.  For anyone wishing to cover more distance, feel free to work the pot-luck lunch into your day’s plans and just meet us at the beach.  Contact Jonathan Thomas with any questions at jonathan.m.thomas@gmail.com

Scottish Music Night (Encore!)

This event is sold out.

Internationally acclaimed Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser (from Inverness, Scotland) and cellist Natalie Haas are coming again to the Inverness Yacht Club for a special benefit performance for the IYC Youth Sailing Program (YS).  Alasdair and Natalie perform world wide and are among the most highly regarded artists preforming Celtic music.

This again will be a very popular event as Alasdair and Natalie have a wide and enthusiastic following in the greater Bay Area.  Attendance will be limited to 140.

Tickets are $50 per person with proceeds going directly to the YS program.  The program will be from 7:30-10:00 on December 2.  Refreshments will be served, AND there will be a special Malt Scotch sampling in recognition of the spirit of the evening.  Tickets will be available for purchase on the IYC website for club members.  Non-members will be able to get tickets on the Saltwater website (events) where there will be a link for this benefit performance.  It is strongly recommended that tickets be purchased early as this is likely to be a very popular event.  Last year’s performance was a sell-out and there were some very unhappy people who couldn’t get tickets.
